140616 TeslaIn a move to increase transparency, Elon Musk has announced that Telsa will release all of their patents to the open public.

“… These days [patents] serve merely to stifle progress, entrench the positions of giant corporations and enrich those in the legal profession, rather than the actual inventors,” says Musk. In other words, patents don’t help the technological industry, they stifle it. They lead to more deliberation and attempts to control. Musk’s claim is that the electric vehicle industry can only grow with increased transparency.

By releasing control of the information, Telsa is encouraging more innovation that could ultimately lead to more supportive auxiliary technology for the company.

Tesla is doing a great job by promoting sustainable sources of energy. By releasing these patents they are encouraging more companies to use their patents and build a better future by promoting sustainability. Yes patents do stifle progression and kudos to Tesla for releasing their patents to public.
